The Lap-Band

What is The Lap-Band and how does it help you lose Weight.

The Lap-Band procedure helps you to control how much solid foods you eat and thus leads to less binge easting and rapid weight loss. During the Lap-Band surgery an adjustable gastric banding is placed around your stomach creating a smaller gastric pouch for foods to dissolve. This smaller stomach pouch slows food digestion and leaves you with a full stomach feeling sooner and lasting longer.

Lap-Band surgery requirements are used as a guideline for healthcare professionals to determine the most appropiate candidates for this procedure. The main consideration is BMI or body mass index, a measurement of your body fat based on height and weight. The BMI for patients must be 40% or higher, 30% -40% if they contain an added health condition complicated by their excess weight. Health Conditions like Diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, knee pain, and other over weight conditions may improve drasticially after the surgery.

Lap-Band side effects and complications
Weight loss with the LAP-BAND® System is typically slower and more gradual than with some otherweight loss surgeries. Tightening the band too fast or too much to try to speed up weight loss should be avoided. The stomach pouch and/or esophagus can become enlarged as a result. You need to learn how to use your band as a tool that can help you reduce the amount you eat.

Infection is possible. Also, the band can erode into the stomach. This can happen right after surgery or years later, although this rarely happens.Complications can cause reduced weight loss. They can also cause weight gain. Other complications can result that require more surgery to remove, reposition, or replace the band. Some patients have more nausea and vomiting than others. You should see your physician at once if vomiting persists.
